Dr. Ian Carrillo, an assistant professor in the OU Sociology Department, published an article in the recent issue of Footnotes, the public magazine of the American Sociological Association. His article “Power and Race in Brazil’s Labor-Environment Nexus” is based on years of researching the Brazilian agribusiness sector. The article describes the wave of progressive labor and environmental regulations that empowered rural workers of color during the 1990s-2010s, and the subsequent reactionary backlash by white elites seeking to restore their diminished power and authority.
