Congratulations to Dr. Martin Piotrowski on being selected as a recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Scholars award to Poland for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Fulbright program offers scholars the opportunity to travel and stay in residence in a foreign country in order to engage in research and teaching activities. Past Fulbright alumni include a prestigious list of 60 Nobel Laureates, 86 Pulitzer Prize winners, 74 MacArthur Fellows, and thousands of leaders across the private, public, and non-profit sectors. While in Poland, Dr. Piotrowski will continue his research on marriage and fertility, migration, and the consequences of population aging. Poland represents an especially interesting research setting from a demographic perspective, as, following Poland’s entrance into the European Union (EU) in 2004, over 2 million Polish nationals migrated to other EU nations, making Poland one of the most important sending countries in the EU. In the decades that followed, Poland has become an increasingly popular migration destination for millions of Ukrainians, as well as Belarusians, Turks, and people from parts of Central Asia. Poland also experienced a significant decline in its fertility rate around the time of the fall of the Soviet Union, and faces a daunting demographic future of declining population and structural aging.
Well Done Dr. P! We are all very excited for you!
