Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling Is a 60-hour program that leads to licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Oklahoma. The CMHC program may be completed in Norman, Tulsa, or a combination of both campuses through a 16-week, weekend, or online coursework.  The OU CMHC program is approved for licensure by the Oklahoma State Board of Behavorial Health.  Our licensed graduates have obtained employment in various settings such as hospitals, outpatient, inpatient, and private practice and work with different populations including children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups.

The University of Oklahoma offers the Master of  Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) on the Norman, Tulsa, and Weekend Program.

This track prepares graduates for careers in counseling and emphasizes critical thinking, social justice, and multicultural competencies. This program is ideal for those pursuing a career as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and students completing this program will meet the academic requirements for the Licensed Professional Counselor license administered by the state of Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health.

Requirements

  • Apply to Graduate School at the University of Oklahoma
  • Check the Graduate College Bulletin for Admission Requirements; including conditional admission, and other admission criteria.
  • The following materials must be uploaded before an application will be deemed complete.
    • TRANSCRIPTS: Upload a copy of transcripts from every college attended. Official copies should also be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions (see address below).
    • GRE: The Graduate Records Exam is NOT a requirement for admission to our program.

    • STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
    • TOEFL SCORE: International applicants must submit a score from either the TOEFL  (minimum of 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test) or IELTS (minimum of 7.0) as well as a Confidential Financial Statement.

    • APPLICATION FEE: A $50 ($100 for international applicants) non-refundable application processing fee is required to submit your online application.
    • Conditional Admission: Anyone admitted as "conditional" must take HR 5203 - Graduate Research and Writing and receive a "B" or better to remain in the Human Relations Graduate program. 

GPA of 2.5 to 2.99: HR 5203 - Graduate Research and Writing, must be completed within the first 12 hours of Human Relations coursework.

GPA of 2.49 and below: HR 5203  - Graduate Research and Writing, must be completed within the first 6 hours of Human Relations coursework.

Applications will be processed and evaluated upon the submission of a completed online application. Offers of admission will not be made until all of the above materials are received by the Graduate Admissions Office.

Program of Study - Effective Fall 2021

Students who began the program Fall, 2021; Spring 2022; or Summer, 2022 will follow the above program of study. This program of study has changed in that it no longer requires the course “Current Problems” and, instead, replaces that course with three credit hours of practicum which total 100 clock hours with 40 being direct client contact. The Clinical Mental Health Program is making changes to our program requirements and our program of study to make our curriculum more rigorous and aligned with the national standard of programs like ours. During this transition period, students will fall under one of two different tracks depending on the start date of your program. You will be expected to follow the program of study that you began the program under. More information on each track below.
