May 5, 2003 - Microbes.info
Microbes.info is a site that examines and presents links to web sites on a wide diversity of microbiology information that is available on the Internet. Special continuing features include stories on the current "hot germ news" (Avian Influenza, microbiology-related bioterrorism, chronic wasting disease, exotic Newcastle disease, SARS, and West Nile Virus, to name a few), a general disease watch, links to online microbiology resources and to various societies. Many of these stories are to original links, such as the SARS information in the Peoples Daily. Site by Al Chan, webmaster for Microbes.info (***1/2).
May 2, 2003 - Global Land Environments During the Last 130,000 Years
This site presents an atlas of the ice age Earth that is based on compilations of the available information in the literature for each continent. Needless to say, the North Hemisphere is quite well known, whereas some other locations are not. Dates are given in radiocarbon years (based on the ratio of two carbon isotopes, which changes predictably over time). The initial condition and potential presence of contaminating sources of carbon may significantly affect the outcome, so the actual chronology is still being worked out. These data are compiled by Jonathan Adams, Environmental Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. (****) -S
May 1, 2003 - Hans' Paleobotany Pages
Hans Steur of The Netherlands has assembled a succinct and well illustrated history of vascular plants from the Silurian (400 mya) to the Permian (~325 mya); this time span circumscribes vascular plant evolution from its simplest forms to the seed habit. Pages on this site include: the oldest land plants, including Cooksonia, Rhynie Chert pictures (slide show), Parka decipiens, very old myriapods from Scotland, (Seed) ferns from the Piesberg and Ibbenbüren, the club-moss tree: Lepidodendron, the horsetail tree: Calamites, the gymnospermous trees: Cordaites, leaf of the seed fern tree Neuropteris, little animals in the coal swamp, Permian flora of Lodève (France), the tree fern Tempskya and some links. As the index shows, it is really quite a large site! The site is available in Dutch and English. (***1/2) -S
