Transferring Courses

Students who transfer to OU often ask how to get credit for a course taken at another institution or how to know what course to take at another institution that will transfer back to the University of Oklahoma. These questions fall into specific categories, with varying answers. See the information below for the answer to your particular question.

General Credit

The OU Admissions office is where you need to send all transcripts for initial course evaluation. They maintain a database of courses offered at universities both in the United States and internationally.

  • If a course on your transcript is already in the Admissions office database as being equated to a specific OU course, that will be noted on your transcript and on your Degree Navigator record.
  • If a course on your transcript is already in the Admissions office database, but it is not equated to a specific OU course, but it has been approved for general education credit, the general education designator will be noted on your Degree Navigator record, with that specific general education requirement being fulfilled by the transfer course.
  • If a course on your transcript is neither equated to an OU course nor noted as meeting a general education requirement, please review the next sections for your options.

Specific Course Credit

If a course on your transcript is not equated to an OU course for which you believe you could earn credit, you have two options:

  • First, you can ask the Admissions office to review the course for a possible match to an existing OU course. Although the Admissions office reviews all courses that come in on students' transcripts for exiting course equivalencies, your specific course may be one that has not ever been reviewed. If this is the case for your course, you can provide the Admissions office with a copy of the syllabus for your transfer course. They can then follow their review process. The course will be entered into their database either as being equated to a specific course or as "no OU equivalent."
  • Second, if you have a course that is not equated to a specific OU course, but it might be used to fulfill a major requirement in your degree program, you may take a syllabus of your transfer course to your advisor for review. After reviewing your syllabus (and/or other information they may request), the department will determine whether or not your transfer course can be substituted for one of your major course requirements.

General Education Credit

If you have a transfer course that you believe may fulfill a general education requirement at OU, please follow the listed guidelines:

  • Take your course syllabus (from the semester in which you took the course) to your college-level academic counselor. If you have additional materials such as writing assignments and exams, turn those in with the syllabus.
  • Your college academic counselor will review the materials and submit them to the General Education Committee for review. After review, your academic counselor will be notified of the committee's decision. Your college academic counselor will then notify you.
  • If your course is approved for general education credit, the designator will be added to your academic record and will show on your Degree Navigator record.
  • Many courses that are not equated to a specific OU course meet general education requirements; however, it is only as these courses are presented to the General Education Committee that they can be designated as such.

How Do I Know What Course To Take Somewhere Else?

Sometimes students want to take a course over the summer at another institution, but they are not sure whether or not the course will transfer to OU for specific credit, such as general education credit or major course credit.

The transfer equivalencies database is the first place to look for transfer courses that have already been evaluated for OU credit. If you have questions or a course is not listed in the database, please contact the Office of Academic Records, 1000 Asp Avenue room 330, Norman, OK 73019-4076; phone (405) 325-0514; email te@ou.edu.
