Fitness and Recreation consists of the Sarkeys Fitness Center (SFC), the Murray Case Sells Swim Complex (MCSSC), the Recreation Fields, and the tennis courts on Timberdell. The SFC features eight basketball/volleyball/badminton courts, racquetball courts, a 1/6th mile indoor track, a multi-purpose activity room, multiple weight room areas, a large cardio room, and a climbing wall. The Murray Case Sells Swim Complex consists of an indoor and outdoor pool. The indoor pool is an eight lane 25-yard lap pool with a 13-foot diving well with one 1-meter springboard. The outdoor facility consists of an Olympic-sized pool 50 meters by 25 yards with a 13-foot diving well and two 1-meter springboards. The outdoor lap pool ranges from 4’ to 5’6’’ deep and the indoor diving well ranges from 9’ to 13’. Recreation Fields host outdoor events such as flag football, Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and lacrosse.
SARKEYS FITNESS CENTER
The Sarkeys Fitness Center (SFC) at the S. J. Sarkeys Complex opened in the summer of 1981 to give students a home for intramural sports and fitness. In 2003, the SFC received an addition and renovation to create a 150,000 square-foot indoor facility for a variety of programs, services, and equipment to meet the recreational and fitness needs of the OU community.
The Sarkeys Fitness Center features: eight basketball/volleyball/badminton courts, four racquetball courts, 1/6th mile indoor track, one large multi-purpose activity rooms, two weight room areas, a large cardio room with mounted flat-screen TVs, a climbing wall, and a personal training room. Membership includes use of the facilities including the Murray Case Sells Swim Complex (MCSSC), FIT classes, a locker, and other amenities provided to faculty and staff.

The Murray Case Sells Swim Complex consists of an indoor and outdoor pool. The indoor pool is an eight lane 25 yard lap pool with a 13 foot diving well with one 1-meter springboard. The outdoor facility consists of an Olympic size pool 50 meters by 25 yards with a 13 foot diving well and one 1-meter spring boards. The outdoor lap pool ranges in depths from 3’6” to 5’6” and the diving well ranges from 9’ to 13’. The indoor lap pool ranges from 4’ to 5’6” deep and the indoor diving well ranges from 11’ to 13’.
The aquatics program offers many programs and classes for the OU, Norman, and surrounding communities. Some of the programs offered are summer group swim lessons for children and adults in our outdoor facility, Aqua Zumba® classes, shallow and deep water aerobics classes, birthday parties, private swim lessons, American Red Cross certification classes for lifeguards and water safety instructors® (swim lesson instructors), swim stroke clinics and private adult group classes.
The indoor complex opened in the fall of 1973 and the outdoor complex opened in the summer of 1975. Once opened the Murray Case Sells Swim Complex was home to both a men’s and women’s NCAA Division I collegiate swim teams. The men’s program ran from 1973 to 1986 and the women’s program ran from 1975 to 1986. After the college teams were dropped the Murray Case Sells Swim Complex became the exclusive home of Norman High School, Norman North High School, and Sooner Swim Club swim teams until 2024. The Swim Complex is currently hosting the Mid-Del Public Schools swim teams during their swim season.
RECREATION FIELDS
Recreation Fields which host outdoor events such as flag football, Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and lacrosse are located two blocks east of Jenkins Avenue on Stinson Avenue. Tennis courts are located at the corner of Timberdell and Jenkins Avenue.
