STUDENT TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

The UCC provides supervised training in short-term counseling for university students, in addition to other possible professional activities, to further the trainee’s personal and professional growth. The UCC has a commitment to providing a rigorous training experience, and to supporting trainees build and refine their clinical skills. We believe that trainees learn best in a congenial and supportive environment, where they are also challenged to further their skills and competency, and encouraged to progress toward greater professional independence, as developmentally appropriate. Each trainee’s clinical experience will be tailored to meet individual needs and preferences where possible. Please note, this is a non-paid master’s internship.

Trainees have the opportunity to receive supervised training in the following areas:

1. Counseling intervention and treatment with a culturally diverse population, including intake and individual counseling. Depending on availability, there may be possible optional supervised training opportunities in couples/partnered and group psychotherapy.

2. Professional ethics and legal and professional issues and their application to the practice of counseling.

3. Appreciation of ethnic and cultural diversity, and sensitive appraisal of the impact of such diversity on professional practice.

4. Depending on availability and trainee’s previous experience, there may be possible optional supervised training opportunities in psychological assessment and diagnosis of a culturally diverse population, utilizing a broad range of instruments, methods, and clinical interviewing techniques. Master’s trainees must complete a graduate-level course in the principles of psychometric testing and assessment, and must demonstrated readiness as assessed by supervisors before conducting assessments at the UCC.

Duration

A full time master's internship experience typically consists of a two-semester commitment that involves 16-20 hours of work on site per week, including one hour of supervision by either a supervised doctoral intern or by a licensed senior clinician, and 1.5 hours of group supervision.
