Scholarships
The Scholars Walk honors recipients of the nine scholarships listed below.
The Fulbright Scholarship Program
The Fulbright Scholarship Program, named for American statesman J. William Fulbright, sponsors U.S. and foreign participants for exchanges in all areas of endeavor, including the sciences, business, academe, public service, government, and the arts and continues to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Since the program’s first participants in 1948, there have been more than 250,000 Fulbright students, scholars and teachers.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program was established in 2000 by a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Selection criteria include outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential land commitment to improving the lives of others.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
The Marshall Scholarship
Founded by a 1953 act of the British Parliament, and named in honor of U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall, Marshall Scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the Marshall Plan and they express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts. Up to 40 Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at a United Kingdom institution in any field of study.
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is a national, competitive scholarship sponsored by the U.S. – Ireland Alliance. Named to honor former U.S. Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the scholarship is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.
The National Security Education Program
The National Security Education Program was established as a result of the David L. Boren National Security Education Act of 1991, which mandated that the Secretary of Defense create and sustain a program to award scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students; fellowships to U.S. graduate students; and grants to U.S. institutions of higher education. These awards are for study or program development in languages and regions critical to national security.
Rhodes Scholarship
Rhodes Scholarships, established to honor the will and bequest of Cecil J. Rhodes, are the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world. Each year 32 students from the United States are selected as Rhodes Scholars to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The first U.S. Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904. Rhodes Scholars are chosen for their outstanding scholarly achievements, character, commitment to others and to the common good and potential for leadership.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive federal scholarship granted to U.S. college juniors for demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service. Congress created the scholarship in 1975 as a living memorial to the 33rd president of the United States. The Truman Scholarship is the official federal memorial to its namesake president.
The Udall Scholarship
The Udall Scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources. The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.
