Looking Through the Eye of Landfalling Hurricanes: An Observational Perspective

Date Recorded: November 9, 2020

Michael Biggerstaff, OU professor of meteorology, will discuss the evolution of observing capabilities for landfalling hurricanes, the challenges in collecting ground-based observations in this environment, and how the data collected is used to improve our understanding of the evolution and societal impacts of hurricanes at landfall. In particular, he will show how mobile radars are used to study the characteristics of winds that produce significant damage and how perturbations in the eyewall during landfall create atmospheric waves that affect inland flooding and the development of eyewall mesovortices.
