Petra Klein, a professor in the School of Meteorology and executive associate dean in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences at the University of Oklahoma, has received the Helmut E. Landsberg Award from the Council of the American Meteorological Society.

“We are extremely proud that Professor Klein’s extensive contributions to the field of urban meteorology have been so well recognized by the American Meteorological Society,” said Berrien Moore, dean of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences and director of the National Weather Center. “Her research and its applications are exceptional even by the highest standards. Moreover, her work directly contributes to the health of people and the resilience of communities and cities. It will be everlasting.”

Helmut Erich Landsberg, the award’s namesake, was a noted and influential climatologist and an important figure in meteorology and atmospheric science. The Landsberg Award was created during Klein’s service as a member of the AMS Board on Urban Meteorology nearly 20 years ago.

“I am very honored to receive this award and to join the group of AMS award winners,” Klein said. “Urban meteorology is a very important yet relatively small area of research and many previous Landsberg awardees have served as mentors, colleagues, collaborators, and friends during my career.”

Klein will be formally presented the Landsberg Award during the 102nd AMS Annual Meeting scheduled for January 2022.
