Michael Matthews is pursuing his Ph.D. in Management and International Business at the University of Oklahoma. His research focuses on leadership, employee wellbeing, and employee-technology interactions. His dissertation is entitled Three Essays on the Ideal Worker. The “ideal worker” social norm reflects an expectation that employees are fully dedicated to their organizations, as manifested by their 24/7 availability and workaholic tendencies. At a high level, Essay 1 is a state-of-the-art review of the ideal worker. Essay 2, meanwhile, qualitatively explores how the body serves as a sensebreaking agent regarding employees’ perceptions of the ideal worker norm. Essay 3 is a mixed-method design that focuses on how employees compare their own affective commitment, availability, and workaholism to their coworkers.
Before entering graduate school, Michael worked as a computer programmer at several technology companies. He enjoys following sports, fishing, and spending time with his wife and children. He can be contacted at michael.j.matthews-1@ou.edu.
