Community-Oriented Policing
The OU Police Department’s philosophy for a Police and Community partnership extends into a true practice of two-way communications with the community. We are committed to establishing and maintaining a close relationship and responding to the needs of the OU Community.
OUPD's Community Relations goal is to foster and present an image of professionalism through conduct, provision and implementation of community oriented police services, demonstrating sincere and continuing interest in the protection, welfare, education, and training of our OU Community.
OUPD’s commitment to Community Oriented Policing is as a philosophy based on the concept that police officers and private citizens (OU Faculty, Staff and Students) working together in creative ways can help solve contemporary campus community problems related to crime, fear of crime, social and physical disorder, and campus decay. The philosophy is predicated on the belief that achieving these goals requires our police department to develop a relationship with the OU community, allowing it a greater voice in setting local police priorities and involving them in efforts to improve the overall quality of life on campus.
The philosophy places an emphasis on a true partnership between the OU community and the OU Police Department, and shifts the focus of police work from handling random calls for service to solving OU campus and community problems.
