Critical Minerals Workshop of the Southern Midcontinent

Purpose

The Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) is hosting a virtual workshop on the exploration and exploitation of critical minerals found in the southern midcontinent.  Raw materials are vital for the U.S. and global economy.  The growth of our country and national security is contingent upon the continued supply of key minerals (e.g., barite; barium; bertrandite; beryllium; copper; cobalt; lepidolite; lithium; graphite; rare-earths; etc.). The regional Critical Minerals Workshop will include geoscientists, researchers, students, scientists, GIS and geostatistical analysts, engineers, social scientists, environmental scientists, and academic experts in this field.  Additionally, the conference will include disciplines of mining engineering and other relevant areas.

To increase the understanding of improved, regional scale infrastructure that will likely minimize costs, land use and hazards, permits, best practices, and constraints, we will need coordinated future planning on critical minerals in the region.  This workshop may open job opportunities for our state as well.

Format

This conference will be held on November 8-10, 2021 (3-hour virtual meetings from 10am-1pm CST) via Zoom.  The theme of the conference is “Critical Minerals: Up-and-Coming Opportunities." This event is going to have a variety of session types, including interaction of the participants to generate ideas and address related questions, presentations, discussions, and brainstorms. The workshop will include several group discussions to further explore key topics. We have invited key Oklahoma officials along with members of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Critical Mineral Division.

For further information about presentations, registration, sponsorship, and logistics, please contact Molly Yunker.
