Summary of Accomplishments

• BUILT INSTITUTE STRUCTURE: Eight member universities
• CONFERENCE: Two major International Energy Conferences organized at OU.
• SHORT COURSES: First two courses with the Organization of American States
• STUDENT RECRUITMENT: With cooperation agreements number of Latin-American students increased.

MAIN RESEARCH PROJECTS:

• Research projects in Argentina, Guatemala, Bolivia and Colombia
• Founding brought: $810,000.00

INDUSTRY SHORT COURSES:

• Estimated number of courses coordinated since 2002 for the oil and gas industry in Latin America: 80
• Over 20 professors from OU have participated as well as non-OU professors.
• Major impact: besides the supplemental salary for Professors and EIA support, it has helped with recruiting of students and OU recognition in the Western Hemisphere as a leading university in the energy sector.

Research Funding:

The EIA, under the leadership of former Ambassador Edwin Corr, brought research funding to OU as follows:

• Initial funding from the Schusterman Foundation in Tulsa: $450,000.00
• Xan Field Project. Guatemala. Ministry of Energy and Mines. ($90,000.00) for the School of Petroleum Engineering and School of Geology and Geophysics. PI Professors: Roy Knapp and James Forgotson
• Los Cavaos project.  Argentina.  YPF.  ($450,000.00) for Institute for Reservoir Characterization. PI Professor: Daniel O’Meara
• Supergas Project. Bolivia. Private investors. ($150,000.00) for Gas Utilization Technologies Institute, School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering. PI Professor: Richard Mallinson.
• Ecopetrol. Colombia oil company. Joins Rock Mechanics Consortium (over $120,000.00). I don’t know how many years they have been members. This is for only 3 years.

TOTAL Funding: $810,000.00

Conference Funding:

• EIA/OIPA Conference in Oklahoma City. “Success in the Oil and Gas Industry: New Rules, New roles, New Technologies and New Opportunities”. Grant from OK Secretary of Energy) $30,000.00

Short Courses Funding:

• Organization of American States (OAS) course in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Professors: Roy Knapp & James Forgotson. ($25,000.00) Students from 6 countries attended.

• OU Professors: Roy Knapp, Faruk Civan, Samuel Osisanya, Djebbar Tiab, Richard Hughes, Jonathan Kwan, Miguel Bagajewics, Subhash Shah, Yucel Akkutlu, Jean Claude Roegiers, Carl Sondergeld, Deepak Devegowda, Xingru Wu, Ahmad Jamili, James Forgotson, Roger Slatt, Shankar Mitra, Kurt Marfurt, plus other faculty from Texas A&M, Univ. of Texas, qnd Colorado School of Mines.

Major impact:

• Provides supplemental salary for professors. Helps with retention of professors.
• Supports EIA office (pays for trips, office supplies, partial salary, phone, copies)
• Helps with recruiting of students for the College and OU
• Has positioned OU recognition in the Western Hemisphere as a leading university in the energy sector.
