Nicolai Fechin: An Artistic Journey

October 3, 2025 through April 5, 2026

Nicolai Fechin: An Artistic Journey explores the life and work of a Russian-born artist best known for his colorful portraits of people in New Mexico during the first half of the 20th century. His work, however, encompassed a much broader range of subjects and cultures encountered through a lifetime of travel and reflection.

Fechin’s search for health, patronage, and artistic inspiration led him from Russia to New York, New Mexico, Southern California, and beyond. This exhibition, comprised of more than fifty works spanning the entirety of his career, examines the influence family, friends, training, and travel had on the artist's work.

Nicolai Fechin: An Artistic Journey is organized by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and supported by generous donors to the museum’s endowment.
