Art of the American Southwest

Within the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art’s universal collection, the Art of the Americas is the largest in scope and broadly represents the artistic development of the indigenous communities from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in North America, with limited representation from Central and South America. The range of artistic media includes oil and watercolor paintings, ceramics, woven and hide textiles, and an incredibly diverse selection of cultural arts, including over 1100 katsinam carvings. There are four galleries dedicated to permanent collection exhibitions to provide visitors with ongoing access to selected works. Additionally, Pre-Columbian art is included in the collection.

As with many of the collection areas, the donors’ collecting interests have increased the breadth of what is represented, including significant gifts from James T. Bialac, Richard H. and Adeline J. Fleischaker, Dr. and Mrs. R.E. Mansfield, Charles H. and Miriam S. Hogan, Rennard Strickland, and Mark Landrum. The Eugene B. Adkins Gallery is dedicated to exhibition of his significant collection, which includes many major Native American artists.
