Constructed from taut Lycra fabric and a complex system of motors and pulleys, the fabric is “tugged” through numerous strings by rotating motors above. “TUG” uniquely utilizes the School of Art & Art History’s Lightwell Gallery. Viewers can experience the mechanism and movement of the piece on the gallery floor as well as the third and fourth floor of Lightwell.
Hodgins-Jones said she was excited to install her piece at the gallery because the vertical element of the place was very unique and introduced a new canvas for her work. It is a meditative piece owing largely to the regularity of movement and sound produced by the motors, but it is also a project of immediate translation,” Jones said. Hodgins-Jones takes great interest in language translation and the ever-present use of machines in today’s society. Her work harvests this technology and organic movement as it uses strings to connect the mechanical and the pliable.
