Conducting I
Instructor: Sandra D. Knudson
Conducting I, II, III will be one hour per day of Levels I, II, and III. Students will be involved in score study, teaching techniques and conducting. Children’s choir issues and music selection will also be addressed. Master class work in Level III may be videotaped if the student so wishes.
Solfege I
Develop skills in aural discrimination, dictation, and sight singing with simple rhythmic and pentatonic/ diatonic patterns. Develop skills in practicing 2–part exercises, with attention to precise intonation and accurate rhythms.
Kodály Concept I
Instructor: Bev Anyan
Review and discuss the educational contributions and philosophy of Zoltan Kodaly. Review and evaluate Kodály-based materials, process and curricula designed for children in the middle grades. Create, develop and share activities and resources relating to a Kodály-based sequence of instruction. Research, prepare and share concept plans for use in lower grades. Explore part singing and elemental harmonic development. Research and explore connections to art music appropriate for lower grades. Develop cross-referenced song collection.
Conducting II
Instructor: Sandra D. Knudson
Conducting II will be one hour per day. Students will be involved in score study, teaching techniques and conducting. Children’s choir issues and music selection will also be addressed.
Solfege II
Instructor: Sandra D. Knudson
Strengthen skills in aural discrimination, dictation, and sight singing through the use of advanced rhythmic and modal patterns. Strengthen two - and three-part skills. Strengthen the ability to sing in the major and minor modes. Strengthen the ability to sing absolute letter names. Become acquainted with the Ionian, Aeolian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Lydian and Phrygian modes.
Kodály Concept II
Instructor: Bev Anyan
Review and discuss the educational contributions and philosophy of Zoltan Kodaly. Review and evaluate Kodály-based materials, process and curricula designed for children in the middle grades. Folk Song Research
Instructor: Dr. Casey Gerber
The course consists of lecture, presentation, class discussions, and performance of British ballads and other ballads found in the Americas and around the world. Students will listen to, perform, and research ballads. Topics studied will include ballad scholars, ballad resources, and ballad/folk song analysis.

Conducting III will be one hour per day. Students will be involved in score study, teaching techniques and conducting. Children’s choir issues and music selection will also be addressed. Master class work in Level III may be videotaped if the student so wishes.
Solfege III
Instructor: Sandra D. Knudson
Strengthen skills in aural discrimination, dictation, and sight singing through the use of advanced rhythmic and modal patterns. Develop the ability to identify modulation and sing through it correctly using the proper solfege. Become fluent in the Ionian, Aeolian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Lydian and Phrygian modes. Be able to sing chords and their inversions in solfege.
Kodály Concept III
Instructor: Dr. Joy Nelson
Identify and review Kodály-based curricula, materials and methodology designed for use in upper grades classrooms. Synthesize and apply knowledge and understanding acquired through investigation and discussion to specific problems and strategies in music education. Develop curricula, lesson plans and activities designed to prepare, practice, and assess skill and concept development in upper grades. Complete a personal retrieval-based folk song collection.
