Young Artist Competition

The Young Artist Competition is a solo competition for freshmen and sophomore students. The top 7 competitiors will perform in the Young Artist Competition Honors Recital.

There are cash prizes for first and second places; 7 students will be featured with a guest pianist at the Honors Concert.

2025 Competition

  • The competition will take place March 3rd from 5:30pm - 10:30pm in Pitman Recital Hall
  • Applications are due February 24th by end of day (11:59pm CST)
  • The competition will be open to the public
  • The top 7 finalists will be announced and sent through email to all of the competitors after the judges have finished deliberating. This email will be sent as soon as possible, no later than 2 hours after the competition has ended.

2025 Young Artist Competition Honors Concert

  • The top 7 competitors will perform at the Honors Concert on April 9th, 6:00pm - 7:00pm in Pitman Recital Hall. This concert will be recorded and live streamed.
  • The Honors Concert will ideally feature a vocalist, keyboardist, string instrumentalist, brass/woodwind/percussion instrumentalist, and three additional performers from any group who are determined by the judges.*
    • If there are less than 2 competitors in a specific instrument family or vocalists, then that specific instrument family won't have guaranteed representation in the Honors Concert.

Prizes

Students must be available for the April 9 concert in order to accept an award.

  • 1st Place: $400 and performance at Honors Concert
  • 2nd Place: $200 and performance at Honors Concert
  • 3-7 Place: Performance at Honors Concert

Eligibility

  • Freshman or sophomore music major enrolled in applied lessons
    • Must be in your first or second academic year, no further than the 4th semester of study
  • Must be in good academic standing at the time of the competition
  • Competitors will be full-time students
  • Average GPA must be above 3.0

Competition Guidelines

  • Perform up to 7 minutes of solo repertoire
    • For the competition, performance time may be reduced to 5 minutes to accomodate all participants. Winners will perform the full material at the Honors Concert.
  • Pieces with piano are highly encouraged, but not required
  • No repertoire restrictions
  • 1 movement or complete piece is suggested for the competition
    • Vocalists may consider singing two pieces, as long as they fit within the competition time allotment.
