Course Descriptions, Subject Matter, and Requirements
This course is designed to discuss geographical bases of political conflict and international
relations. Emphasis will be on power and conflict in the regional framework. Upon successful
completion of the course, students are expected to understand such topics as:
- The geographical bases of national states and nationalism and the processes of political
nation-building and devolution.
- The rise of ethnic conflict as a major development in global political disputes.
- Changes and patterns in the world political map and contemporary geopolitical questions.
- International organizations, international law, and other relevant issues in international
relations.
- Environmental issues and politics in global environmental politics.

Since this course will utilize the world wide web for quizzes, discussion, and research, it is imperative
that students have access to a computer and web browser that will allow forms. Without
these features, students will not be able participate in these exercises, and their performance will

In addition, students MUST be familiar with using their email account and web surfing. The Dept. of Computing and
Telecommunications Services (DCTS) offers free courses for students to use their computer accounts. Check the
OU web page for additional information on course schedules or call 325-6988 to
register. Students should enroll in these courses as soon as possible.

Course Policies:
- Course updates: A reminder that students are expected to check the update page daily for announced AND
unannounced changes in readings, exams, due dates, etc. This page may be reached at

- Late Examination: Students who miss an exam or quiz for a legitimate reason (university
activities or illness) will be given a make-up exam. These are scheduled only once. Completion of
all exams, quizzes, and assignments is required to achieve a passing grade.
- Disability: Any student in this course who has a disability that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating
his or her abilities should contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss
accomodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate his or her educational
opportunites.
- Attendance policy: Students are expected to attend all lecture sessions. The only excused absences will be for
official university-sponsored activities and illness, particularly influenza, mononucleosis, and similar contagious diseases. Poor
attendance may affect individual grades.
