Dr. Fernando’s research interests focus on counselor education, clinical supervision, and group work with a focus on international group work and disaster counseling. The results of her research have been published in American Counseling Association division journals such as The Journal for Specialists in Group Work, Counselor Education & Supervision, Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Journal of Mental Health Counseling, The Family Journal, and The Clinical Supervisor, an APA division journal.

Dr. Fernando serves in the editorial boards of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work, Journal of Creativity in Mental Health, and Counseling and Values. She regularly presents at learned society conferences at the state, regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Fernando primarily teaches group work, counselor supervision, family, and internship in counseling. Prior to joining OU in 2016, Dr. Fernando served as assistant, and then associate professor at the University of North Texas’ Counselor Education Program. She earned her Bachelor of Science in early childhood education, with a Montessori diploma from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, and a Master of Science degree in guidance and counseling from Loyola University, New Orleans. She completed her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of New Orleans. Dr. Fernando is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor in Oklahoma and Texas.
