The Faculty Honorifics Committee at the University of Oklahoma plays a crucial role in enhancing the national and international recognition of faculty members and their respective departments and colleges.

The committee is dedicated to helping faculty members receive formal recognition for their outstanding research, scholarship, and creative activity.

While the goal of the committee is primarily focused on facilitating prestigious honorifics such as membership in the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), the committee supports faculty in pursuing prestigious and highly prestigious awards within their respective fields to increase the visibility of faculty suitable for admission to the national academies.

The committee reviews faculty credentials and achievements and selects exceptional nominees with the help of department chairs and directors and award committees. The committee ensures equitable representation in the nomination process and supports and tracks active nominations. Faculty members can seek guidance to put forth successful nominations and engage in the nomination process by providing relevant information.

The committee operates under the advisory capacity of the senior vice president and provost, the vice president for research and partnerships, and the chair of the Faculty Senate. It consists of nine members appointed from the full-time faculty, representing diverse areas of the university. These members are:

  • Georgia Kosmopoulou, Associate Dean for Research, DCFAS; David L. Boren Professor; Edith Kinney Gaylord Presidential Professor of Economics; Faculty Honorifics Committee Chair
  • Sarah Ellis, Vice Provost for Faculty, Office of the Provost
  • Horst Hahn, Distinguished Materials Visiting Professor, Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships
  • Kyle Harper, G.T. and Libby Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty; Professor of Classics and Letters; Senior Advisor to the President, Provost Emeritus
  • Diane Horm, George Kaiser Family Foundation Endowed Chair of Early Childhood Education and Founding Director of the Early Childhood Education Institute

  • Daniel Resasco, Gallogly Chair of Engineering and George Lynn Cross Professor
  • Caryn Vaughn, Presidential Professor of Biology; George Lynn Cross Research Professor
  • Helen Zgurskaya, George Lynn Cross Research Professor; Professor of Biochemistry

By working closely with the committee, faculty members can receive support to achieve the recognition they deserve for their exceptional academic contributions. For more information, please contact Georgia Kosmopoulou or Shelby Shoemaker, the administrative assistant for the committee.
