NORMAN, Okla. – For his third-year winter break, Evan Moros ditched Norman’s colder weather in favor of Costa Rica and Panama. But the University of Oklahoma student wasn’t traveling for a vacation: he was learning how international supply chains work, from visiting a pineapple farm trading with the U.S. to seeing a distribution center in action.

“It’s this background that we don’t really think about shopping here at all our Walmarts that you get to witness there and see how complicated it truly is, and how much logistics go into it,” Moros said.

Moros and other OU students went on the trip as part of the JCPenney Leadership Program, offered at the Price College of Business for undergraduates who want to hone their leadership skills. A native of the Dallas suburb of Frisco, Tex., Moros said the program was a major selling point for attending Price.

He has been passionate about the field since he was a teenager, taking part in a high school philanthropy organization, volunteering at his church’s annual food festival and learning from his godfather how to invest. “Seeing that you can tie in money and helping others through investments and make that into a career – that’s what led me down the wealth management track and trajectory,” said Moros, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Economics.

Since arriving at OU, Moros has pursued personal and professional growth opportunities. He took part in the Honors College’s summer study abroad program at the University of Oxford as an incoming second-year student. He is also a member of the Capital Group Fellows program at Price, which is offered to students interested in a finance career and provides valuable industry support, such as licensing exam preparation

Moros has paid this help forward through the JCPenney Leadership Program. Along with providing its members valuable training and lifelong friends, the program allows them to mentor fellow business students.

“I enjoy sitting down with my mentee and talking to him about my experience in college and sharing some of the lessons that I've learned,” Moros said. “I wish that when I was younger as a freshman, that I had somebody older in my field that really has gone through it and could provide me some perspective.”

His leadership extends to his work with OU’s Wealth Management Club. After the club went through a brief period of inactivity, Moros helped restart it and has served as its president for multiple semesters. The club hosts speaker events, wealth management case studies and career support – with Moros emphasizing programs like Capital Group.

“Throughout my time at OU, I've realized the importance of these types of things,” Moros said. “What I try to do is direct these students towards those programs and say, ‘Hey, if you're interested in the industry and you want to stand out on a resume, because you're going to get screened before you get that first round interview, you want to have something on there that is particularly important.’”

Moros is betting on New York City for his future: this summer, he’ll be joining the wealth management division of Jefferies Group, an investment bank and financial services company, after a successful internship last year. As he supports advisors in helping clients strengthen their financial situations, he’ll be continuing to serve others: “That was the reason why I wanted to get into wealth management,” Moros said. “If that's one area of life you're not as stressed in, then it can help improve other areas.”
