NORMAN, OK – A new SafeRide bike rack, located at the northeast corner of Asp Ave. and Boyd St., has been installed as part of a partnership between OU SafeRide and the City of Norman’s microtransit program, Norman On-Demand. Fabricated through the Norman City Arts Council, the bike rack is a visual reminder for OU students to prioritize safety and avoid drinking and driving.
“When students have safe and reliable transportation options, it empowers them to make better decisions,” said David A. Surratt, Ed.D., OU vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “The SafeRide bike rack serves as a visible reminder of our commitment to campus safety. Through this partnership with the City of Norman, we’re able to offer resources that make a genuine impact in promoting responsible choices and supporting the well-being of our students.”
The OU SafeRide program offers no-cost, safe transportation for OU students from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Students can access the service by downloading the Norman On-Demand app and registering for an account with their OU email address.
Since its inception in 2004, the OU SafeRide program has provided over 322,000 safe rides and continues to serve as a vital resource for student safety. In Fall 2023, the program averaged more than 460 riders per month. Supported by the Student Government Association, SafeRide remains an essential tool in discouraging impaired driving among the OU community.
