January 2023 Spotlight

Abby Foster.

From OU Nightly to the Market 5 news in only two years' time, Abby Foster is a force. The 2020 broadcast journalism graduate recently shared how her career path led her to writing for FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, how Gaylord prepared her, advice for current students and more, all after this commercial break...

What is your favorite memory from your time at Gaylord College?
My favorite memory at Gaylord would be working for OU Nightly and getting the real, hands-on experience that has helped me in my career so far.

Do you have a favorite faculty/staff member at Gaylord?
It’s so hard to choose a favorite faculty or staff member at Gaylord. Everyone I worked with was so influential to me in those four years. I would not be where I am without Bob Dickey, Barbara Merckx, Ken Fischer, Mike Boettcher, Lee Reynolds, John Schmeltzer and Julie Jones.

How did your career path lead you to FOX 4?
All of the guidance and support of the staff and faculty led me to the role I had at my former and current stations. I couldn’t have done it without them!

Describe your role at FOX 4.
I am a producer and AP at FOX 4 in Dallas. I write many stories that air daily on the 5, 6, 9 and 10 pm shows during the weekend and our two weekend evening shows!

What do you consider to be one of the most significant moments of your career so far?
Moving back to Dallas is definitely the biggest moment in my career so far. I’m so proud of the fact that I’m working in Market 5 at 24 years old!

How did Gaylord College prepare you for your future career?
Gaylord gave me the confidence that I needed to pursue this career. It also gave me the support I needed from professors, friends and staff.

What advice would you give to current students aspiring to a career in mass communication?
The biggest advice I can give any current students is, to get involved early and do as much as you can. You never know what you will end up loving. Try it all.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
One of the things I love about Dallas is there are so many different ways to get out and learn about the city and its history. Whether it is a museum, park or just walking around the city, there’s always something to do here.
