How Title IX Applies to Pregnancy & Parenting

If you are pregnant, nursing, and/or parenting, you may have access to modifications.

General Information

The University prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender, which includes discrimination and harassment on the basis of pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and all forms of sexual harassment, including sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking in compliance with applicable federal laws, including Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (as reauthorized), and applicable Oklahoma laws.

For Students

The University of Oklahoma does not discriminate in its education programs against any student based on the student’s current, potential, or past pregnancy or related conditions.  Students who are pregnant or have a pregnancy-related condition may have access to reasonable modifications.

Please fill out this form to request modifications due to a pregnancy/parenting-related matter. Completing this form will allow you to receive assistance from the Institutional Equity Office or other appropriate offices to discuss available resources/modifications.

Reasonable modifications may include, but are not limited to:

  • Breaks during class to express breast milk, breastfeed, or attend to health needs associated with pregnancy or related conditions
  • Eating, drinking, or using the restroom
  • Intermittent absences to attend medical appointments
  • Access to online or homebound education (if available)
  • Changes in schedule or course sequence
  • Extensions of time for coursework and rescheduling of tests and examinations
  • Being allowed to sit or stand, or carry or keep water nearby
  • Counseling
  • Changes in physical space or supplies (such as access to a larger desk or footrest)
  • Elevator access
  • Other reasonable changes to policies, practices, or procedures.

For Faculty and Staff

Students receiving reasonable modifications are responsible for communicating those modifications with faculty about the approved modification. If you have questions about how to implement reasonable modifications, please contact the Institutional Equity Office at 405-325-2215 or ieo@ou.edu. If you believe a recommended modification may be a fundamental alteration, please also contact the Institutional Equity Office at 405-325-2215 or ieo@ou.edu

Employees who are pregnant and/or experiencing a pregnancy-related condition should contact Human Resources.
