This week, the University of Oklahoma celebrated our first-generation college community with a special on-campus event for students, faculty, and staff. Student success has always been a hallmark of our university, so we take seriously our commitment to support, encourage, and champion students on their academic journeys.
A first-generation student is “one whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor’s degree. Even if an older sibling is pursuing a bachelor's degree or has already earned their degree, you are still considered a first-generation student.”
First-generation college students are important members of the OU Family. With more than 27% of OU Norman students identifying as first-generation, and dedicated faculty and staff ready to support, OU students have a strong community by their side.

OU has been recognized as one of the more successful higher-education institutes in attracting first-generation students. Recent freshman classes have seen a 25% share of its class be the first in their families to attend college.
