We’ve been waiting for you! Congratulations on your admission, and welcome to the OU Family.
You must be feeling so many emotions—receiving an admission to the University of Oklahoma is a big deal! Especially if OU is your dream school, like it was for me. If I could go back to when I was in your shoes and tell my past self my OU story, I would have never believed it. It would, however, cement my commitment to choosing OU. My parents weren’t able to guide me through the college admissions process as their education was stopped short before immigrating to Oklahoma from rural Mexico. Despite the circumstances, they emphasized the importance of earning an education, and their encouragement triumphed over the obstacles of being a first-generation student.
I grew up in Yukon, Oklahoma, and now live in Edmond, Oklahoma with my husband, Conner. He’s also an OU grad. We met halfway through college in OU’s Office of Leadership & Volunteerism. Our freshman year, Conner was in the President’s Community Scholars and I was in the President’s Leadership Class. We joke we were destined to meet on the second floor of the Oklahoma Memorial Student Union. We both currently work in Oklahoma City—Conner as a Systems Engineer at The Boeing Company, and myself as a Data Analyst at Metro Technology Centers. As OU alumni, we love visiting Norman to cheer on the Sooners, and supporting the OU initiatives that were transformative to us when we were students.
In May 2020, I virtually graduated from OU with a bachelor’s in human Relations and a bachelor’s in public & nonprofit administration. My coursework was intriguing and exciting, but what made OU special to me were the relationships and experiences gained through campus involvement. OU was so kind in the opportunities it gave me. On April 28, 2017, along with 13 of my best friends, we founded the Alpha Rho Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Incorporated. The week before that, I joined a lineage of inspiring women as the 2017 Miss Hispanic OU. OU opened doors so I could study abroad in Italy and again later in France. One of the most defining pages in my OU story was serving the study body as the chair of the Campus Activities Council. Again, no way would my high-school-senior self believe what OU had in store for me. If no one has told you yet, let me be the first to say that the same goes for you! Your journey is just beginning. The great things coming for you might be hard to imagine now, but rest assured, they are headed your way.
You might be undecided on where you’ll land for college, and that’s okay. Wherever you choose to go, I hope you pick a place that makes you feel the way OU made me feel those four years of undergrad: supported, capable, worthy, and heard. The opportunities are waiting for you, future Sooner, and the OU family is cheering you on!
Boomer Sooner!
