CEES Graduate Programs

The graduate program in structural engineering emphasizes the practical aspects of design, while providing students with fundamental backgrounds in both experimental and analytical research methods. Coursework covers steel structures, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, concrete materials, concrete pavements, static and dynamic behavior of structures, earthquake engineering, and numerical methods. Structural engineering also demands a basic understanding of various areas of mathematics such as linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and statistics.

Experimental and behavioral research play significant roles in our graduate program. A fundamental understanding of mechanical and structural systems is developed through a combination of experimentation and numerical modeling. Experimental research programs study the physical response of structural materials and structural components. Analytical methods are used to formulate accurate mathematical representations of mechanical behavior that can be used in the design of structural systems. The critical state of our nation's constructed infrastructure compels us to focus much of our research upon the associated problems and solutions. Finding real solutions to these problems requires cross-disciplinary research that can include geotechnical engineering, material science, mathematics, chemistry and chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. The CEES Structural Engineering faculty, with expertise in concrete materials, concrete and steel structures, numerical modeling, structural dynamics and control and related technical areas, are positioned to lead research efforts to solve complex infrastructure problems.  The Donald G. Fears Structural Engineering Laboratory, with a total lab research space of 14, 453 sq. ft., hosts structural engineering and structural mechanics research efforts.  Click here to read more.
