A Web Page can be a place for an individual's resume, or an electronic business card. For some individuals a Web Page is a personal statement..., for others it is a business identity. Each Web Page is as unique as the individuals that created them. The actual purpose of Web Pages is currently being defined. Do a little..., (of what is called) Web Surfing you can see for yourself what Web Pages actually are. (Very Soon..., we will provide you with an appropriate listing of Web Pages to visit).
An individual (personal) Web Page..., is your portion of (what is called) CyberSpace!
Variations on a word theme:
Web Page - A Web Page is any page in a series of Pages
Home Page - A Home Page is the "first page" (or Anchor page) in the series of Pages.
The following (.gif image) is the Web Page for the College of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma. In fact..., this Page is called a Home Page because it is the beginning for all the "links" associated with the College of Architecture.
(The "Links" are the areas inside the yellow rectangles..., if you "click on" Landscape Architecture for example, the link will "take you there" and you can see the Program Overview..., or meet the Faculty.)
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
(Yes..., You could "open" a Web Page with an (ASCII) text editor, or a word processor..., but the "special tags" would only be intrepreted "correctly" in a Web Browser.)
The Web Browser translates HTML language into words and graphics.
To see the HTML code (on any Web Page) take this action...
From the Netscape Toolbar select View, then "click on" Document Source.
The screen will change..., and the HTML tags will be visible (as below). Notice how HTML is written in "plain english like" text. ("click on" the "X" in the upper right hand corner to return to the normal Browser View.)
Remember..., It is no longer necessary to "actually write" HTML code to create a Web Page..., the Netscape Navigator GOLD Editor will create HTML code using WordProcessor "like" tools. (Ref: Chapter 10)
All Web Pages have a "unique" URL.
The URL (Address) for the College of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma is:
http://www.ou.edu/architecture
(Notice..., no capital letters
and no spaces in the Address ...by convention)
The URL address for this (current) Web Page location is:
http://www.ou.edu/WebStudy/Netscape/N_Web_Page.htm
(Notice the "upper and
lower" case mix..., and the use of the Underline not Spaces).
Every page in this series of Web Pages has it own unique URL.
In fact..., every Web Page on the Internet has its very own unique URL.
The URL address work just like an electronic version of the United States Postal Service Mailing Addresses, ...and just like the Telephone Company's (Area Code) and 555-1212 numbers. For each page..., there is only one unique address.
An important (HTML/ Internet) feature...., is the ability to "connect" a series of URL Addresses together. Perhaps forming a story or perhaps relating a sequence of events.
