MAIR Academics

The Master of Arts in International Relations program is a non-thesis, 33-hour degree program. Students can choose from courses in a variety of disciplines, including: Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and International and Area Studies.

The MAIR program offers courses in multiple formats: live, online and hybrid courses. While the variety of course formats provides flexibility to students, MAIR degree seeking students will be required to complete at least two in-person courses. We strongly encourage students to complete this requirement early, particularly if they know they will be deployed or moving during the course of their degree.

The MAIR program provides a broad international relations education that draws on the expertise of a large group of professors. Students benefit most from the program by seeking out instruction from a variety of professors and exposure to diverse ideas and topics. To ensure this takes place, students may not complete and may not include on their Program of Study more than 3 courses taught by any single professor.

Degree Requirements

Required Core Course (3 hours)
IAS 5793 Graduate Studies in International Relations

Required Research Methods Course (3 hours)

Core Area – Politics, Government and Security (9 hours)
A minimum of three PGS courses must be taken.

Substantive Areas (12 hours)
A minimum of two courses must be taken from each of two of the following three substantive areas:

  • Identity, Culture and Communication
  • Economics, the Environment and Geography
  • Regions, Nations and History

For approved courses, visit the Course Offerings tab.

All MAIR courses are title-specific. Some courses have the same course number. Only the course titles listed on the MAIR website are accepted for the MAIR degree.

Please note: While the MAIR program offers a wide spectrum of courses, not every course listed will be offered at every site. Students are encouraged to consult the PACS’s Schedule and Syllabi information for yearly course offerings.

Elective Courses

Two IR-approved elective courses (6 hours) must be taken.

Elective courses represent the breadth and depth of the core and substantive areas. Depth of understanding is increased by taking electives in a single area while breadth of understanding is increased by taking electives across several degree areas.

IR-approved elective courses may be found within the Core Area of Politics, Government and Security (PGS) or the following Substantive Areas. For approved courses, visit the “Course Offerings” tab.

Dual Master's Degrees

Dual degree programs allow students to pursue two degrees simultaneously in two fields of study. To obtain a dual degree, a student must satisfy the admission, course, and examination requirements of both programs.

Requirements:

  • A student must declare and be admitted to both degree programs before 12 hours of coursework have been completed.
  • Up to four courses may be “shared” between degree programs.
  • Shared courses must be appropriate for each degree and approved by each department. (For MAIR/HR specific requirements, see below.)
  • Dual degree students must graduate with both degrees in the same semester.

Students pursuing a dual degree must submit a Program of Study form for each program to the Graduate College at the same time. Both forms must be approved by the Graduate College before the student will be authorized to begin their comprehensive exams.

Dual MAIR/HR:

  • Dual MAIR/HR students should use an even two MAIR and two HR courses as their four shared courses.
  • Dual HR students should use HR 5023 and HR 5093 as their shared HR courses within the MAIR degree.
  • HR 5023 Research Methods will count as the required MAIR Research Methods course.
  • HR 5093 Introduction to Graduate Studies in Human Relations will count as an elective course.
  • HR courses may not be used within any core or substantive area of the MAIR degree, including the Identity, Culture and Communication (ICC) area.
  • Dual degree students should contact their HR academic adviser to discuss other shared course options.

I (Incomplete) Grades

An I is a neutral mark and means that a course is incomplete. An I is not an alternative to a grade of F. To receive an I mark, a student should have satisfactorily completed a substantial portion (70%) of the required coursework for the semester.

Upon the assignment of an I mark, the instructor must complete an Incomplete Contract Form. The instructor should indicate the following to the student and to the Office of Academic Records:

  1. Reason for the Incomplete mark
  2. Description of the remaining assignments
  3. Procedure for the student to turn in the remaining coursework
  4. Current grade, should the student not complete the remaining coursework
  5. Time limit for completion of coursework

The time limit allotted for course completion may not exceed one calendar year. If by the end of the time limit no change in grade has been assigned, the mark of I will be changed to the pre-determined permanent grade (as noted by professor in #4 above). If an Incomplete Contract Form has not been submitted, the I mark will become an F.

Degree Completion

The MAIR degree requires the completion of 33 graduate-credit hours and a non-thesis comprehensive examination. To qualify for a graduate degree, students must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all graduate coursework.

A MAIR degree-seeking student must complete all degree requirements within five years of the first enrollment in any graduate-level OU course to be applied to the master’s degree. For more information regarding the time limit for completion of a master’s degree, consult the Graduate College Bulletin 7.1.5.
