John Schmeltzer is a Senior Fellow in the University of Oklahoma Center for Intelligence and National Security. Mr. Schmeltzer is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who joined the faculty of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication in August 2009. He is the Engleman/Livermore Professor and co-heads the Gaylord News program with Senior Fellow Mike Boettcher. Schmeltzer spent most of his professional career at the Chicago Tribune as an editor and reporter. It was as a business writer that he helped direct and was a lead writer in the Tribune’s aviation project, “Gateway to Gridlock,” which won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism. Two years later he was named a finalist for the UCLA Anderson School of Management Gerald Loeb award for stories about the bankruptcy of United Airlines. He is the recipient of three Peter Lisagor awards from the Headline Club of Chicago and the outstanding alumni award from Northern Illinois University in 2002.
