Biography

Dr. Ipsen studies development and inequality at the nexus of food, environment, collective action, and the law. Her projects discuss timely issues in moments of sociopolitical change, such as the political economy of genetically modified corn, gender and work, and agricultural labor during COVID-19. She is particularly interested in how place shapes relationships between local actors and non-local investors, examining how the politics of production and structures of place affect governance and development outcomes in local communities. Her regional expertise lies in the Americas, specifically in the Midwestern U.S., Hawaii, the Southern Cone (Chile, Argentina & Uruguay), and the Caribbean (Puerto Rico & the Dominican Republic). Her research has been published in leading journals such as Sociological Perspectives, Law & Society Review, the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, and Environmental Sociology.

She has over ten years of applied research and work experience on international development, labor, gender, and corporate social responsibility with organizations such as Oxfam, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. She teaches courses on labor, globalization, and food, research methods, social movements, and introduction to sociology.
