OU Sociology Professors, Drs. Julie Gerlinger (pictured) and Erin Maher, along with Dr. Susan Stoner from the University of Washington, were awarded a $1.5 million federal grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation for their project, “Promoting Parent and Child Well-Being and Reducing the Need for Foster Care: An Evaluation of a One-Year Home-Visiting and Case Management Program for People Using Substances During Pregnancy”. This quasi-experimental study builds off their current randomized controlled trial testing a three-year home-visiting and case management program for pregnant and parenting people with problematic substance use during pregnancy – the Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP). The new study tests a one-year version of PCAP (i.e., PCAP-1) that will take place in Enid, OK. The goals for PCAP-1 include a reduction in foster care placement, the parent achieving and staying in recovery and is linkedo needed comprehensive services, prevention of prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol in subsequent pregnancies, and a positive return on investment for the state.
