Congrats to Dr. John Carl, who was awarded the Longmire Prize for teaching and innovative thinking. The Longmire Prize is awarded to a faculty member who holds the rank of assistant professor or higher and exhibits a scholarly and thoughtful approach to innovative thinking and this s prize is supported through an estate gift from William and Jane Longmire. Since coming to OU, he has published two textbooks and coauthored a monograph, A Country Called Prison (2015, Oxford University Press). His research areas include criminology and the U.S. Prison system. He is a passionate teacher of Introduction to Sociology and he also mentors graduate students to teach this course. Through John’s teaching in the Inside-Out Program at Mabel Bassett, a state women’s prison, in McLoud, he takes OU students inside the prison to take a course related to drugs, alcohol and incarceration with inmates at that facility. OU is one of the few places in the country offering this type of educational experience with incarcerated women.
Congrats, John! A well deserved Award!
