Graduate student study show that patients need more ostomy information

OU Sociology PhD Student, Leslie Miller, has her research highlighted on the United Ostomy Association of America (UOAA) Website. Results from Miller’s research show that many hospitals are ill equipped to handle the social and psychological toils associated with an ostomy procedure. Ostomy patients are often poorly informed about how to care and maintain their medical equipment and hospital staff also play a role in stigmatizing these procedures and those with ostomy bags. The UOAA is an advocacy group that supports, empowers, and advocates for 725,000 to 1 million Americans are living with an ostomy. Estimates suggest that around 100,000 new life-saving ostomy surgeries are performed each year. Miller is a 3rd year PhD student who focuses on medical sociology and works with Professor Mitch Peck.  She is currently involved in a national data collection project centering on patient’s experiences with ostomy procedures and equipment.
