Melissa S. Jones was recently selected as the recipient of the Alice Mary Roberson Award from Women & Gender Studies
The Alice Mary Robertson award was established to honor the memory of Alice Mary Robertson, Oklahoma’s first female representative in the United States Congress. The award is given to a graduate student whose scholarly or create activity enhances the appreciation of the contributions made by women to the culture and progress of Oklahoma. Melissa received this award for her dissertation work on violence in the lives of women prisoners in Oklahoma. Melissa’s work seeks to bring awareness to the difficulties incarcerated women experience both in and out of prison. Her research has the potential to contribute to a shift in not only the practices of the ways women are treated in Oklahoma prisons, but also, in women’s lives in the state of Oklahoma itself.
