Frederick B. Swan Scholarship
The Swan Scholarship was established in 2003 by Evelyn Swan in honor of her brother, Frederick B. Swan.
"I'm extremely analytical and love getting invested in the details of things, which is why I originally became a math major and have especially loved courses like Intro to Analysis 1 & 2 and Applied Statistical Methods.
"As an engineering major as well, my experience with math classes and the math degree as a whole has given me the skills to think critically about any problem, which has been a great benefit in my physics and engineering courses as well as my work with Sooner Competitive Robotics.
"I plan to attend graduate school for robotics and autonomous systems starting Fall 2021, and work in research and development of novel software after completion of my Master's or PhD."
Jacob Moser
Jacob is a rising Senior from Carpentersville, Illinois, also majoring in Spanish. His decision to major in math stems from his love of both the theoretical beauty and practical power of the subject. He hopes to use his math and language skills to work in strategy consulting or social policy research in an international capacity.
His favorite part about being a math major is being exposed to a group of students in the Math department with incredibly diverse interests, but that are all united in a love for Mathematics.
Rithsek Ngem
"Math is like a close friend to me, it makes my life easier. It has been a game-changer, where my life changed when I started to obsess with it. Just like doing exercise, running, yoga or meditate to help me think better, doing math helps me think even better.
"I can’t imagine how this world would be without mathematics: physics, chemistry, computer science, especially this amazing 21st technology, where it uses huge amounts of mathematics to be developed for quite different purposes.
"With the love and appreciation for mathematics, I want to quote from John von Neumann: “If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is."
London Willson
London is an astrophysics and mathematics major who focuses on modeling type 1a supernovae spectra, and wants to go to graduate school in physics to become a professor. She became a math major in 2018 after learning a new love for math in her physical mathematics course.
Her favorite moment as a math major was when she first learned about the dirac delta function and spent the rest of the day talking and reading about it.
Andrew Elaryan
"Mathematics is unique because it is the foundation of almost every other field of study, whether that is biology, finance, computer science, or engineering. I love working with data and trying to find meaning in numbers, and my math major at OU has given me the foundational knowledge necessary to do so.
"My favorite math class that I've taken so far at OU is Advanced Applied Statistics, as we combine statistical theory, linear algebra, and programming to analyze multivariate data!"
Tien Tran
"I chose to major in Mathematics because learning more about math gives me great satisfaction and joy. I found that while I enjoyed my Chemistry and Computer Science classes, I really loved solving problems and learning about the math-related portion of the courses.
"Even during a state of confusion after my wisdom teeth surgery, I talked about math. I hope to find a career that will satiate my desire to learn more about mathematics."
Chad Cotton
"Since I was very young, Mathematics has always been my favorite subject in school. It was only natural I continued to follow my passion and become a Mathematics Major at OU, which has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.
"I hope to, in the future, continue engaging in the field of Mathematics in tandem with Economics in an analyst role."

"I have just finished my junior year of my mathematics major and am excited for the Senior year to come. Mathematics is one of the most unique ways of exploring the world, and as such the math major has been an invaluable experience. Mathematics classes have helped me understand complicated theory, and then brought that understanding down to the real life questions that need to be answered.
"I am simultaneously completing my masters in the Political Science department at OU. Math has helped me understand critical methodological concerns in doing more applied policy research, and It has also given me confidence in more challenging techniques as a result of my mathematics training. I am so thankful for this scholarship to help me continue my study of the subject, preparing me to tackle the coming world's problems."

"I became a math major not really knowing what that meant, but the more classes I've taken the more I've fallen in love with the field and the math department's support network. Professors are so active in office hours, the math center is great. This is really a department that wants its students to succeed.
"My favorite math class has been intro to ordinary differential equations, with professor Schnake. It was fun and I always felt like I was learning. I liked the class so much that sometimes I'd procrastinate for other classes by doing ode homework.
"After graduating I want to pursue a PhD in economics."

Faith Blank
Faith Blank is a Junior Mathematics and Political Science double major. She started studying math because she loved it in high school, and she likes the way it challenges her to problem solve and think in new ways.
Her favorite in the math department was Graph Theory (the Euler formula blew her young mind). Aside from studying math, Faith also leads OU's Undergraduate Mock Trial Team and tutors math at a high school in Oklahoma City.
After she graduates, Faith plans to attend law school with the ultimate goal of becoming a federal judge. Boomer!

"Transitioning from high school math to college level math was difficult but with all the support from everyone at OU, I manage to continue loving and learning. I realized that it was not just about using theories in problems anymore. It's about applying those theories and what we learned so far into real life applications.
"It's the understanding of real life application like applying boundary conditions or initial values to heat equations in my Introduction to Partial Differential Equations course that make me more curious and want to learn more. That's why I pursue my BA in Mathematics at OU."
