Prerequisite: Any foreign language background of 1 to 2 years high school or 1 to 2 semesters college courses, a 3.4 GPA and Honors College permission.
This is an accelerated course for students with any foreign language background who wish to move rapidly through LAT 1115 and LAT 1215 in a single semester. It is also appropriate for students who have had two or more years of mid-high or high school Latin but feel need of an intensive grammar review before proceeding to an intermediate course. Students of the latter category can seek guidance by contacting the instructor: pchambers@ou.edu. Students who have completed LAT 1115 and LAT 1215 may not enroll in 1315.
LAT 2113 Intermediate Latin Prose | Instructor: Hansen | Days & Time: MWF 1:00 PM–1:50 PM
Prerequisite: LAT 1215, or equivalent, with a grade of C or better. May be repeated with change of content; maximum credit six hours. This course focuses on the reading and understanding of continuous prose passages of Latin. It begins with a review of word forms and then moves on to further practice with more complicated sentence constructions. Through this class, the student will begin to read Latin prose with increased proficiency and acquire a more thorough knowledge of Latin vocabulary and grammar. The readings include selections from the Vulgate, Caesar, and Livy. Roman history and culture will be an important component as well.
LAT 2113 Intermediate Latin Prose | Instructor: Taylor | Days & Time: MWF 12:00 PM–12:50 PM
Prerequisite: LAT 1215, or equivalent, with a grade of C or better. May be repeated with change of content; maximum credit six hours. Readings in the companion textbooks to those in use in Latin 1115 and 1215, designed to ease the transition into reading the authentic prose of major Latin authors.
LAT 2213 Intermediate Latin Poetry | Instructor: S. Huskey | Days & Time: MWF 10:00 AM–10:50 AM
Prerequisite: LAT 1215 or LAT 1315, or equivalent, with a grade of C or better; May be repeated with change of content; maximum credit six hours. Reading selections from the works of Latin poets, including Catullus, Horace, and Ovid; designed to improve the student’s proficiency in translation and understanding of the Latin poetic technique.
LAT 3313 Latin Prose Composition | Instructor: Watson | Days & Time: MWF 12:00 PM–12:50 PM
Prerequisite: LAT 2113 or LAT 2213 or equivalent. In the tradition of classical education, one of the culminating emphases was the ability to compose elegant, stylistic prose in the ancient language of study. In this course, students will set off toward this pinnacle and learn to compose sentences and continuous passages in Latin. This will be accompanied by a thorough review of Latin grammar and syntax.
LAT 4970 Epigraphy | Instructor: Williams | Days & Time: TR 3:00 PM-4:15PM
Prerequisite: LAT 2113 or LAT 2213 or equivalent. The Roman habit of writing left its most indelible marks in stone and bronze and paint. This course examines the inscriptions of the Roman world and the unique window they provide into ancient life as well as first-hand experiences of ancient historical events both large and small. This course focuses on the fundamentals of translating, editing, and interpreting epigraphic texts, and their manner of scholarly presentation. We will engage with epigraphic texts presented both in traditional publications as well as new, dynamic digital collections.
