GRK 1115 Beginning Greek | Instructor: Davis | Days & Time: MTWRF 11:00 AM–11:50 AM | Gen-Ed: FL

With the aspiration of translating some of history’s most influential works, students will learn the foundational components of Attic Greek. Through the study of the core grammatical elements of the language, such as syntax, morphology, and pronunciation, students start the journey in this introductory course that culminates with the ability to read authentic texts written by ancient authors.

GRK 1215 Beginning Greek | Instructor: Taylor | Days & Time: MTWRF 9:00 AM–9:50 AM | Gen-Ed: FL

Prerequisite: a grade of C or higher in Greek 1115, or first year Greek in high school. As the second of three courses designed to introduce the basics of ancient Greek, this course will bring students one step closer to translating authentic works of well-known Attic Greek authors. Building upon the foundations established in GRK 1115, students will continue to progress in their study of the vocabulary and grammar of the Greek language.

GRK 2103 Intermediate Ancient Greek | Instructor: Morgan | Days & Time: MWF 11:00 AM–11:50 AM

Prerequisite: GRK 1215 or equivalent, with a grade of C of better; May be repeated with a change of content; maximum credit six hours. This course moves from basic grammatical principles to translating authentic, unaltered texts. Students will fine-tune their knowledge of Attic Greek prose and begin reading poetry and Ionic texts. Authors will include, among others, Plato, Euripides, Thucydides, and Homer.

GRK 3613 Greek Epic Poetry | Instructor: Greene | Days & Time: TR 12:00 PM–1:15 PM

Prerequisite: GRK 2103 or equivalent, with a grade of C or better; May be repeated with change of subject matter; maximum credit six hours. The tales of Greek gods and heroes come to life in the poetry of authors such as Homer, Hesiod, and Apollonius. By reading some of the most cherished texts from antiquity, students will marvel at the ability of these authors to entertain ancient and modern audiences while exploring concepts of heroism, love, morality, theology, and the afterlife.
