SERU

Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) Survey

Overview

Initially created and deployed first within the University of California system, SERU is now used by a growing consortium of peer research universities, including members of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Opened to international members in 2010, the consortium now includes several research universities in Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa.

The Undergraduate SERU survey offers potentially valuable information for academic program management. For instance, students are asked to identify their major and then to provide feedback about their major—their reasons for choosing the major, the academic challenge, degree requirements, communications, learning opportunities, advising, and climate for students. They are also asked to rate their satisfaction with various aspects of their program. Where enough majors have responded to the survey, a summary of the feedback regarding the major is provided to academic programs.

The undergraduate SERU survey was administered at OU Norman Campus for the first time in spring 2022 to gather information from degree-seeking undergraduate students on student engagement, both curricular and co-curricular, and to provide information to help administrators, faculty, staff, and student leaders improve the student experience.

Confidentiality: Student identities and individual responses to the survey are confidential.

Eligibility: SERU survey is only meant for degree-seeking students who are 18 years and older and are enrolled in the two most recent semesters prior to the survey deployment.

Survey Access: When the survey is deployed at OU, students can access it online using their OU Net ID (4x4) and password.

Survey Questions: Both the undergraduate and graduate versions of the SERU survey examine various aspects of the student experience at OU including research, mentoring, health and well-being, financial support, campus climate, and professional development.

Incentive Drawing: Students who complete the undergraduate SERU survey are entered into a drawing to receive an incentive (e.g., Apple Watches, Apple Air Pods, Wireless Headphones, and Amazon or Starbucks gift cards) for their participation.
