Top Life Defining Moments in Higher Education:

  • My parents were non-traditional students at OU when I was young. My mother graduated in 1990 and my father in 1995, so my first exposure and memories of OU were very much associated with academics. I even attended my first class at OU in the College of Education when I was 3 or 4 years old. As fate would have it, this happens to be the same college from which I am earning a PhD.
  • I was fortunate to have an on-campus job at Career Services during college. This was my first authentic exposure to student affairs, and whether I knew it or not at the time (READ HERE: I didn't), that job and the connections I made as a result established the foundation for me to become an academic advisor at OU.
  • My sophomore year of college was my first year to live on campus because I commuted during my first year. The freedom and independence that everyone else around me had already experienced was very new to me and I sorely mismanaged that, which was reflected in my GPA for the Fall 2003 semester. I knew I wanted to be at OU and I knew I need to make improvements if I was going to stay, so I did. Beginning with Spring 2004, I never again had a semester GPA less than a 3.0.

While in college, I experienced:

  • Balancing work and school.
  • Difficulty building and managing successful study systems.
  • Financial Stress.
  • Being a part of a Greek organization.
  • Academic motivation challenges.
  • Overcoming daily challenges through resiliency.
