Top Life Defining Moments in Higher Education:

My undergraduate mentor, Dr. Elizabeth Kissling, was the first professor I ever had who openly talked about navigating higher-ed spaces as someone from a working-class background. I had always dreamed about working in higher-ed but I didn't think it was possible for someone like me. She made me realize it was. Getting rejected from every school the first time I applied to PhD programs. As painful as it was at the time I had applied to schools based on prestige and not whether or not they were a good fit for my work. Getting rejected forced me to re-think my priorities, find a better way to articulate my research vision, and apply to schools whose faculty and classes could help me achieve what I wanted to do. Teaching--I don't have one defining class as I have been outrageously blessed with amazing students throughout my time in higher-ed. I have learned so much from the people who have passed through my classroom and I am still in touch with many of them. Teaching others, in any capacity, are the moments I feel most alive and aligned.

While in college, I experienced:

  • Balancing work and school.
  • Being undecided on a major.
  • Financial Stress.
  • Being a first-generation college student
  • Homesickness
