Why Internal Medicine?

Meet our Program Director

Bernadette Miller, MD

We are committed to training excellent, compassionate internists that excel not only in medicine but also develop skills in civic engagement and health care advocacy. More than a 'traditional' residency, our school promotes an understanding and exploration of social determinants of health.

To be a successful physician in the 21st century, you will need to understand health system dynamics, including financing and delivery. Facility with electronic health records and information exchange is already fundamental to providing evidence-based, cost-conscious, and appropriate care. You will be exposed to all of these elements.

In Tulsa we are blessed with two federal grants that impact clinical care and training:

1. We are a Beacon community, for which MyHealth Access Network received $12 million in startup and operational funding to develop a robust health information exchange. We use these tools to better track patient care around the region and analyze data to promote better population health.

2. We are a recipient of a Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) pilot grant to be part of a Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative (CPCI). These funds pay us a monthly per-member fee to deliver team-based care to a select Medicare population, enhancing chronic disease management and keeping our patients healthier longer (and out of the hospital!).

Unique aspects of our residency training program include:

- Resident Academy with curriculum on Tulsa, affiliated care agencies, and poverty simulation

- Didactic curriculum anchored by a weekly 'academic afternoon' with Team-Based Learning (TBL)

- Outpatient clinic experience in NCQA-accredited Patient-Centered Medical Home
