One OU doctor has put his military and medical expertise to use in his effort to aid the Ukrainian people amid the Russian invasion.

Dr. Robert Lim, professor of surgery at the OU-TU School of Community Medicine, vice chair of education, and a general and bariatric surgeon with OU Health, recently returned from Ukraine, where he offered training to civilians on combat medicine.

Lim recently shared his experience on Dr. Jabraan Pasha’s podcast, Lean In.

Pasha is associate professor in the department of Internal Medicine at OU-Tulsa and assistant dean of student affairs.

A decorated Army veteran, Lim said he and his group were able to bring much-needed medical supplies to Ukraine, train volunteers on treatment of biochemical weapons and provide some direct medical care, among other services.

Lim shared with Pasha that the suffering in the region hit close to home for him and his family because they have an adopted child from Ukraine. When news of the conflict that began in late February made American headlines, he and his wife were compelled to consider a trip.

“You feel like you have to do something,” Lim said on the podcast. “Because of that, I felt a real pull to go. To talk to the Ukrainians directly and hear their mentality about this war was very inspiring.”
