Open Study/Research Awards

While the broad application components are the same, each country and program has specific requirements which should be reviewed carefully before starting the application process.

The two broad types of Fulbright grants are:

  • 900+ awards
  • 8-10 month grant (varies by country)
  • Provides funding to pursue independent or collaborative research project, study, or arts projects abroad
  • 140 countries currently accepting proposals

Application Components

  • Biographical data
  • Statement of grant purpose: 2 page grant proposal
  • Affiliation letter(s)
  • Personal statement: 1 page narrative essay
  • Foreign language forms (if applicable)
  • 3 Recommendations
  • Transcripts
  • Critical Language Enhancement Award statement: ONLY available for select countries: China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco and Russia
  • Supplementary material: ONLY for creative and performing arts applicants. See details here

English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Awards)

  • 1200+ awards.
  • 8-10 months.
  • Help teach English and U.S. culture in classroom.
  • 20 hours per week acting as an in-class resource for English-language learning students (varies by country).
  • 20hrs per week dedicated to “Host Country Engagement.”
  • Available in around 75 countries.

  • Statement of grant purpose: 1 page grant proposal
  • Personal statement: 1 page narrative essay
  • Foreign language forms (if applicable)
  • 3 Recommendations
  • Transcripts
  • Critical Language Enhancement Award statement: ONLY available for Russia.

If you are applying for a Fulbright-National Geographic grant you will follow all the campus procedures and meet campus and national deadlines, but some parts of your application will differ from an open study/research application. Please read relevant instructions carefully.
