The Dog that Build Bridges

The Dog that Builds Bridges

As members of the OU police department and Norman bomb squad, Master Sergeant Vollmer and his K9, Caesar, protect the OU and Norman communities.

For most of us, June 24 is the one day we get to bring our furry friends to work with us, but for Master Sergeant Greg Vollmer, every day is 'take your dog to work day'. Vollmer and his K9, Caesar, are partners fighting crime as members of the OU police department and Norman bomb squad. Together, they protect the OU and Norman communities while also bridging the gap between the public and police force.

Each day brings something new for the pair, but there is one constant; Officer Vollmer and Caesar always start their days by eating breakfast together. After breakfast, their adventures begin.

Being one of the best explosives detection K9 units in the state, Caesar is in elite company. Prior to any events with large attendance, such as football or basketball games, Caesar sweeps the venue in search for any explosives or possible dangers.

Apart from bomb detection, Vollmer and Caesar also answer calls for service, conduct community policing and engage with the community by doing walkthroughs at Goddard Health Services.

Once while at Goddard, Caesar heard a little girl crying and dragged Officer Vollmer to where the girl was. The girl was at Goddard for a large cut above her eye. Caesar was able to calm her down, and insisted on staying by her side until she was all stitched up. Caesar's heart may just be as soft as his furry coat.

When Caesar isn’t on duty, his favorite thing to do is play with his Kong toy that he has had since he was a puppy. “He lives for that toy,” said Vollmer. Caesar also enjoys making new friends, so next time you see Officer Vollmer and Caesar on campus don’t hesitate to go say hi. For more information about OUPD visit their website.
