NORMAN, OKLA. –Following on the heels of two successful events, the National Weather Center at the University of Oklahoma has again partnered with the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Norman Arts Council to announce the third National Weather Center Biennale, which opens April 23, 2017 at 1:00pm. Reception will include announcement of winners as well as the chance to vote for your favorite.
The international juried exhibition focuses on weather in contemporary art and awards $26,000 in cash prizes. “We had 575 submissions from around the world,” said Berrien Moore, director of the National Weather Center. “We were so impressed with the talent that came in. This is going to be quite a show!”
An overall prize of $10,000 will be awarded to one work for Best in Show, with $5,000 given to the first-place winners in three categories: painting, mixed media and photography. This year we are also adding $1,000 people’s choice award.
The National Weather Center Biennale is proud to announce the juror for the 2017 Biennale: Joe Goode. Goode will be making the selection of award recipients at the opening reception on April 23rd. First recognized for his "Pop Art" milk bottle paintings and cloud imagery, Goode has combined various traditional and non-traditional media in the creation of his artwork. He has explored images which project a way of seeing "in and out" and "up and down" as well as things that can be seen through: milk bottles, oceans, waterfalls, clouds, and torn skies.
"The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is excited to participate in this collaboration with the National Weather Center and the Norman Arts Council,” said Mark White, Director and Curator at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. “The dynamic interdisciplinary environment of The University of Oklahoma and the enthusiastic support of the Norman community in general makes this an outstanding and unique national, even international, event.”
“We are very much looking forward to the third National Weather Center Biennale,” said Erinn Gavaghan, Executive Director of the Norman Arts Council. “The past exhibits were remarkable and the Norman Arts Council is delighted to again be a part of the team.”
