OU HSC Scholarships Grow Due to Generous Gifts

More students at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center are receiving scholarships than ever before.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- More students at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center are receiving scholarships than ever before, announced OU President David L. Boren at the December meeting of the OU Board of Regents.

The College of Medicine’s five-year Second Century Scholarship Campaign topped its $10 million goal in just over 3 years, doubling the total scholarship endowment. The scholarships awarded to medical students have gone up seven-fold since 2005.

The College of Nursing received more than $270,000 in scholarship funding in the past six months to support students from the bachelor’s to doctoral degree levels. At the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Center, 50 students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing are receiving $1,000 scholarships, thanks to a gift from the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation.

The College of Public Health received a $50,000 gift from Leslie Hudson of Oklahoma City to fully endow a new $2,500 scholarship for a qualified student in the Biostatistics and Epidemiology program and a $25,000 gift from Scott, Susie, Regan and Shannon Henley of Oklahoma City to partially endow a new $2,500 scholarship to help recruit students into the Health Administration and Policy program.

In addition to the gifts to scholarships, leadership development opportunities for students have increased. In the College of Pharmacy, a five-year gift of $250,000 from CVS Caremark will fund the OU College of Pharmacy/CVS Caremark Summer Symposium for leadership development and the CVS Caremark Leadership Library, a resource library that will serve OU pharmacy students and pharmacy students nationwide. A portion of the donation includes $12,000 annual stipends for graduate students to participate in the symposium.

The recent gifts are part of the University’s 125th Anniversary Live On, University fundraising campaign, a $500 million initiative to build a financial foundation that will further OU’s reputation as a pacesetter in higher education. The campaign has as a central focus increasing the University’s general scholarship endowment by $100 million.
