How to start a conversation about suicide | Jeremy Forbes


Is there someone in your life dealing with anxiety, depression or thoughts of suicide -- but is too ashamed to talk about it? Jeremy Forbes saw this happening around him, and now he's on a mission to teach people how to start a conversation about it. In this deeply personal talk, Forbes shares his approach to helping a group of traditionally silent men in his community open up about their struggles. "We can all be life preservers," he says.

Helping and Referring a Friend to the UCC


Share the University Counseling Center as a resource to a friend who might be experiencing increased stress regarding homesickness, family stress, relationship issues, changes in mood, or other mental health challenges. If you feel like your friend may be having thoughts to hurt themselves you can help them call us at 865-974-2196 or National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.

If you are worried about a fellow student who is in distress, you can make a report to the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) who can reach out and offer that student appropriate resourches. 

Warning Signs A Student Might Be In Distress:

  • Significant change in appearance, mood and/or social functioning
  • Behavior that creates a disruptive or hostile enviornment
  • Actions that potentially endanger the safety of any member of the OU community
  • Behavior that impacts one's ability to function appropriately and successfully on campus
  • A sense that someone is struggling or that something is wrong
